Construction Progress Photos of The I-59/20 Bridges in Birmingham

“Contractors working for the Alabama Department of Transportation continue into the 21th week of construction operations on the Interstate 59/20 bridges through downtown Birmingham. The I-59/20 bridges in Birmingham are being rebuilt as part of a $475 million project that will require the highway to be closed for an estimated 14 months. These bridges, vital to the city of Birmingham’s business district, were originally designed to carry 80,000 vehicles per day, but the current traffic load is nearly twice that. That closure began January 21. These photos were taken June 12, 2019. Highlights this week  are new sections being  constructed  and extended between the BJCC and Boutwell and near the Red Mountain Expressway ramp. Also new additions being made near 16th Street North.” Click here to view the photos by Joe Songer on al.com
